What's 'wabonga'?
THE word wabonga is the Anglicised interpretation of an Aboriginal phrase and placename, wabong ngon boojek (meaning 'trouble'). It is believed to have been adapted from the Pangerang language and refers to the Wabonga Plateau, an area overlooking the headwaters of the King River in North East Victoria, Australia.
At the conclusion of World War II the Wabonga Plateau was among parcels of Crown land subdivided for distribution to returning servicemen under Australia's soldier settlement scheme. Among those taking up acreage there was Private Gordon Butler, who with his wife built a double-storey log hut on his allotment and cleared away native eucalypts, wattle and tea-tree to create open grazing pasture for his small herd of dairy cattle.
In the early 1960s the Butlers left the farm they had created and the property was sold to Frank and Barbara Ryan of nearby Cheshunt, whose daughter would go on a quarter of a century later to found Wabonga Press.
The Wabonga Plateau in its entirety is now in the hands of Parks Victoria and forms a small but historically significant part of Victoria's Alpine National Park.
Wabonga Press is named as a tribute to the tenacity of the Butlers and Ryans during their decades on the plateau and to the Pangerang people who were the original custodians of the land.
